All About Batteries

What is a battery? Simply put, it is a device to store
electrical energy in the form of chemical components. In
simple words, it is a storage cell, the fundamental unit
of a battery. Cells together become a battery. A basic
component of a standard battery is a cardboard tube. it is
used to hold the battery cell together and provide a stable
place for the electrical contacts. . If you use a cardboard
tube from a battery ,for any other purpose The chemicals
inside may cause unforeseen consequences. Plastic holders
are also used to contain batteries.
In our daily life, we face situation where we just can~t
move forward without batteries. These batteries have become
a very essential part of our life. So obviously, we have to
spend some time and money in purchasing and maintaining
these batteries. The amount of money depends upon the size
and capacity of the battery. Mark my words. This article
will put a fresh light on the subject of battery.
Batteries come in two categories: "Disposable" and
"rechargeable". Everyday use of disposable batteries will
continually cost the money of replacing the batteries. So
items that take batteries and are used often, everyday, or
constantly, may do better using rechargeable batteries. We
enjoy Rechargeable batteries because they are more stable
in use, and when they go dead they can be recharged and
used again. Both types of batteries have their own
importance. Of course, for many things, we will prefer
rechargeable batteries. The basic criteria of choosing a
battery are based on its cost and dependability.
Throwaway batteries consists of various types such as
specialty, common carbon-zinc, and alkaline. There are
dozens of types of throwaway batteries. Like specialty,
special purpose batteries but we won't cover them here. The
ones we will discuss are the common carbon-zinc and
alkaline, and the comparatively new lithium.
Carbon-zinc batteries are the oldest type of standard
disposable battery. The advantage of carbon-zinc batteries
are their price. We use them in our daily routine, usually
in devices that do not have a high power need. There are
many brands of carbon zinc batteries on the market like
Duracell, Everready, Energizers. However for most
applications a much better overall disposable battery is
the alkaline battery. Again made by companies like Duracell
and Eveready etc.
The main characteristics of alkaline are: service life
considered in years, good performance at low temperatures,
leak resistance, no need for rest period between uses,
steady high current output, material-wise very strong, and
inherently safe by design. You will find basic difference
in their construction. Be careful while using these
batteries since the wrong usage of battery can damage it or
even may be quite dangerous and harmful for your body.
What does "Rest period" mean in reference to batteries?
A carbon-zinc battery requires a rest period after a
significant use. But alkaline cells don't have this delay
factor. After getting low its functioning begins to
diminish. Alkaline can maintain high current. The inner
resistance of the battery establishes the utmost current it
can provide. Don~t try to recharge an alkaline cell because
it will cause overheating and mess up the structure of
battery.
There are various types of batteries available in the
market today. Their shelf life varies from days to years.
Some batteries are quite expensive like the one named
"Yardney", but it has superb high power and is designed for
excellent performance.
We hope that you have got enough information about
batteries to know one or two important things. Hope to be
alert and careful with this useful equipment and enjoy
properly.
